Enhanced chat support for mpv is ready for testing.

You can e-mail us feedback via dev@syncplay.pl – if you want to comment on the mpv chat interface you can use https://github.com/Syncplay/syncplay/issues/168

Features new in Syncplay 1.5.2:

  • You chat straight from mpv. By default you press enter, write your message, then press enter again. There is also an optional mode so you can start typing straight away.
  • You can how see multiple chat messages at once in a ‘chat room’ style or a ‘scrolling text’ style.
  • New ‘Chat’ tab in the Syncplay configuration dialogue. To get to this check ‘Show more settings’ in the normal dialogue.
  • (Experimental) Enter the commands from the command line interface mode straight into Syncplay by prefixing your message with “/”, e.g. “/u” to undo last seek and “/t” to toggle whether you are in ready mode.

Features new in Beta #3:

  • Fix to issue which meant non-US characters only worked in direct input mode
  • Added some additional Polish characters (thanks sztelke)
  • Those hosting their own server can now specify the chat message length they want using Add –max-chat-message-length (public servers have not been updated yet so still use the lower limit)

Download links:

Known limitations:

  • You need to be using mpv >= v0.28.0 for the On-Screen Controller to be hidden during chat (e.g. to avoid it overlapping with the text input when it is positioned at the bottom)
  • Not all responses to /commands are relayed to mpv and only appear in the Syncplay notification window. If you want to fix this then feel free to make a Pull Request!
  • When running your own server you must specify a maximum chat message length through a command line option, e.g. –max-chat-message-length=125

Known issues:

  1. A few dialogues look at bit weird on OS X. This should be fixed when we move away from Pyside1. Discuss the move away from Pyside1 at #152.
  2. If you are having stability issues with mpv on Windows then try running it with the command line switch –opengl-backend=win. If you want streaming to work with mpv then you will need the latest version of YTDL.
  3. If you are using MPC and pauses are ignored then it is probably because you are using madVR. If you are have set the video filter to madVR then you will need to revert to the default filter or disable the ‘delay playback start until render queue is full’ option within madVR. Oh, and if anyone is using MPC or MPC-BE then avoid filenames with % marks (#163).

Syncplay 1.5.0

Syncplay 1.5.0 is now available! The two headline feature are:

  • Text-based chat support – The new chat feature allows you to write messages in Syncplay to others in the same room. You need to be connected to a server running on Syncplay 1.5.0 such as the official public servers. Chat messages are sent in plaintext so Syncplay should not be used to share private or confidential information. You can disable chat on your server with the –disable-chat command line switch.
  • Mac OS X support –  Many have requested better OS X support and a number have made significant contributions to move us in that direction, but massive thanks to albertosottile for finally getting us to a point where we have a solid .dmg file that people can use. Please let us know whether or not this works for you (and your version of OS X) by e-mailing dev@syncplay.pl.

  • * Manually changing playlist item now also seeks to start of file (suggested in #138 and on IRC)
  • * Various GuiConfig tweaks to increase usability (e.g. only ask for password on non-Syncplay.pl servers and don’t ask for media file path by default)
  • * Increase retries and reduce retry delay (suggestion #122 by alok0)
  • * Introduced a maximum username limit of 16 characters (#160 – thanks to everyone who part in the poll)
  • * Changed “Shuffle playlist” into “Shuffle remaining playlist” and “Shuffle entire playlist (discussion at #152 including suggestion by xNinjaKittyx)

Known issues:

  1. If shuffling moves currently playing item then it will switch to the new file in the old position but not rewind. Not sure if it is better to rewind the new file or stick with the old file, but either way the current behaviour is clearly incorrect. Discuss at #153
  2. Files are not rewound in VLC when manually change files (so only rewinds for auto-advance). It would be helpful if we we had someone come forward to take responsibility for testing and improving VLC compatibility as currently.
  3. A few dialogues look at bit weird on OS X. This should be fixed when we move away from Pyside1. Discuss the move away from Pyside1 at #152.

The final version of Syncplay 1.4.0 is out. Thanks to all who have contributed to and supported this release!

Download links:

Windows installer: https://syncplay.pl/Syncplay_1.4.0_Setup.exe
Windows portable: https://syncplay.pl/Syncplay-v1.4.0-Portable.zip
Linux Tarball: https://github.com/Syncplay/syncplay/archive/v1.4.0.tar.gz
Source code repository: https://github.com/Syncplay/syncplay

Syncplay is not properly supported on Mac as none of the core Syncplay developers have a Mac. If you know any good OS X Python developers then please ask them to help resolve our outstanding OS X issues.

Notable change in Final (compared to RC4):

  • Fixed issue with VLC 2 on Linux (#125 reported by blaenk)
  • Fixed VLC issue when lua is in lib64 directory (#103 reported by abhsag24, fixed by daniel-123)
  • Increased timeout thresholds for caching folders (#130 raised by Ghosthree3)

Notable changes in 1.4.0 (compared to 1.3.4)

  • The new Shared Playlist feature means anyone can add a file to a joint queue, and when you get to the end of one file it will automatically load the next one and rewind.
  • Improved compatibility with VLC, mpv, MPC-HC and Unicode
  • Additional Russian messages translated by Corwin
  • …the full Syncplay 1.4.0 changelog is available at: https://syncplay.pl/changelog/

Note: For the new shared playlists feature to work you will need to tell Syncplay the directories where it should try to find the files. Please ensure the media directories you specify do not have way too many files in them or it will take too long to scan.

Syncplay 1.4.0 (RC2)

The new Shared Playlist feature means anyone can add a file to a joint queue, and when you get to the end of one file it will automatically load the next one and rewind.

Fixes in RC2:

  • ! Fixed bug where playlist where a client might erroneously change playlist selection when updating playlist if it had previously been updated by a different user in a way that moved the position of the currently playing file in the playlist.
  • ! Fixed bug where VLC would not play a newly loaded file
  • ! Fixed bug where Syncplay/VLC would sometimes crash if you tried to run with an old version of VLC (reported via Twitter by @coreyp0wner)
  • ! Updated syncplay.lua to make it clear that for VLC sometimes the file needs to be placed in the lib64 folder rather than the lib folder (addressing #103 by abhsag24)

NOTE: For the shared playlist feature to work, the server must be running the latest version of Syncplay.

Linux Tarball: https://github.com/Syncplay/syncplay/archive/v1.4.0-RC2.tar.gz
Source code repository: https://github.com/Syncplay/syncplay

Support for Mac is experimental as none of the core Syncplay developers have a Mac. If you know any good OS X Python developers then please ask them to help us improve our support for OS X.

Changelog:

  • + Add shared playlists feature
  • * By default auto-play only triggers if everyone is playing the same file
  • * Search for media in user-specified media directories rather than directory of currently playing file (e.g. for double click to switch file)
  • ! Fix issue with Media Player Classic (not home cinema) being misidentified as mplayer2
  • ! Fix issues with MPC-HC and mpv being sent commands/queries while loading a file (could cause MPC-HC to crash or Syncpplay to freeze)
  • ! Fix bug loading relative config files in folders with UTF-8 characters
  • ! Show menu bar in OS X (#86 by nilsding, addressing an issue from #81)

Syncplay 1.3.4

Syncplay 1.3.4 RC2 has now been designated as “Final”. If you had that version then you do not need to upgrade.

Windows installer: https://syncplay.pl/Syncplay_1.3.4_Setup.exe
Windows portable: https://syncplay.pl/Syncplay-v1.3.4-Portable.zip
Linux: https://github.com/Syncplay/syncplay/archive/1.3.4.tar.gz

New and changed in Syncplay 1.3.4:

  • ! (mpv) If mpv becomes unresponsive try to guess position for 60 seconds then give a critical error [RC2]
  • ! (mpv) Prevents reset of room position when someone joins with no file
  • ! Prevents file path from being sent to server (fixes bug introduced in Syncplay 1.3.2)
  • * (UI) Updated German translation, e.g. for new features (contributed by DerGenaue)
  • * (GUI) Improve performance of file checking feature (moved folder scanning into separate thread and added caching and 2 min auto re-check)

The ‘double click to switch media’ feature works as follows:

  1. In the Syncplay configuration GUI, go to the ‘Misc’ tab and enter the directories where you store your videos into the “Directories to search for media” list. Syncplay looks through these lists recursively, so you don’t need to list sub-folders. WARNING: Because Syncplay will look through the sub-folders recursively, don’t select a directory with hundreds of sub-folders!
  2. When the main Syncplay GUI window is open, if someone else is playing something which is in one of these media folders (or the folder of the currently playing file) then an icon will appear next to the filename in the list of who is playing what. If you double click the filename it will switch to that file.
  3. If someone is playing a media stream (e.g. a YouTube video in mpv or VLC) then a different icon will appear in the list of who is playing what, and you can double click this to switch to that stream (assuming your media player supports that type of stream). Note: mpv works best with Syncplay for streams.

Syncplay 1.3.3 (Final)

New and changed in Syncplay 1.3.3:

  • + (GUI) Added “public server list” feature to config dialogue (inspired by feedback from Mike Williams)
  • * (GUI) Added 2 second timeout for media search, and made it more efficient (issue reported by Adrian)
  • * (GUI) Per-player arguments now only shown when “show more options” is enabled (inspired by a suggestion from wiiaboo, who also contributed code to the feature)

The 2 second timeout is not ideal, but seems like a reasonable stopgap before we add support to cache files found and to search in a separate thread (assuming the latter is possible). Thanks to everyone who has made this release possible, including Mark James who made the Silk icon set that Syncplay uses. If you enjoy this software, please tell your friends about it and consider contributing to the Syncplay art gallery.
